Himalayan Hotel, Kalimpong

In the early days of the last century, this was the family home of David Macdonald, who helped the 13th Dalai Lama escape from Tibet. It was here that he wrote his book ‘Twenty Years in Tibet’. Now managed by his grandson, this is a hotel of real charm and character with an atmosphere suited to its association with Himalayan history. The Great names of the region have all been guests here – Mallory and Irving, Hillary and Tenzing amongst others.
