India - When to Travel

In the south, October to March are the months when the temperature is at its most pleasant. In the pre-monsoon build up during May and June, it can get particularly hot. July to September is the monsoon season, when wet conditions bring a welcome respite from the temperatures of the previous two months. Torrential downpours followed by sunny spells are a feature of this time of year.

The best time to travel to the northern states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh is between November and March when it is moderately cooler, rainfall is minimal and the temperatures range between 10 and 30ºC (50 and 86ºF). At the higher altitudes, the mornings and evenings are bitterly cold with temperatures in January falling to freezing levels. Woollen sweaters and a warm jacket, gloves and a woollen hat are a must. The days are generally bright and clear and it is warm enough to sit out in short sleeves.
