On the edge of the Thar Desert, the imperial city of Jodhpur was once the capital of the Marwar State. Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, chief of the Rathore clan of Rajputs who claimed to be descendants of the God Rama, it became a major trade centre of the 16th century and is now the second largest city of Rajasthan. Fine palaces, forts, temples, exquisite handicrafts and the indigo blue painted houses of the Brahman tradition are all features of ‘The Blue City’.
