Khajuraho

A calm, green oasis, this small town of just 8000 inhabitants is a respite from big cities and dusty plains. Constructed during the Chandela period, Khajuraho’s famous temples, with their intricate and erotic carvings, are one of the outstanding achievements of Indian art. The sculptures depict many aspects of life at that time, gods and goddesses, warriors, musicians, animals and mythological beasts. There are also many places to visit in the area which provide interesting half or full day excursions: the old fort in the town of Dhubela; the diamond mines at Majhgawan; the Rajgarh Palace as well as the Panna National Park, whose picturesque waterfalls make idyllic picnic spots. |
