Luang Prabang

Laos’ former royal capital, the charming little town of Luang Prabang, is a real highlight for any visitor. Nestling beside the MekongRiver and surrounded by mountains, this has long been Laos’ religious centre. There are dozens of historic temples, French-built villas and streets lined with old shop-houses. The RoyalPalace is well worth a visit, its main hall replete with a dazzling mosaic of cut glass. The Kuang Si waterfalls are also noteworthy, as are the Pak Ou caves, a Buddhist shrine, just a short boat ride away. It is even possible to climb the 328 steps to the top of MountPhousi for fine views of the town and surrounding countryside.
