Meaning ‘City of Light’, this is the highest town in Sri Lanka (1990m) and a major hill resort. This cool and misty escape was a favourite with the British who built lovely, colonial houses with immaculate lawns and colourful flower beds, an 18-hole golf course and a race track. Within a short drive of the town are some of the island’s finest tea plantations.
