The River House, Balapitiya

A stylish, luxurious boutique hideaway set in seven acres of lush land on the banks of the Bentota River. The designer, one of Sri Lanka’s most renowned, has used natural materials such as wood, stone and tiles in warm, earthy colours and incorporated locally acquired antique doors, windows and furniture. The wide ranging menu is reasonably priced and guests are invited to dine wherever and whenever they wish. Although the river is not safe to swim in (crocs!), there is a fabulous pool overlooking the gardens and a deserted beach is just a five minute drive. Guests are (should they so wish) accompanied by a waiter armed with a coolbox.
