View Larger Map		 It is easy to understand why the 18th century corsairs, who used these then uninhabited islands as a hideaway, believed that they had found the most remote corner of the world. One of these islands, Silhouette is thought to have been the home of the Indian Ocean"s most notorious pirate Hodoul.

As a result of their extraordinary , isolated history, these beautiful islands are rich in plants that flourish nowhere else, probably the most famous being the coco-de-mer(sea coconut). Its seed is the largest in nature and gave rise to many legends when washed ashore on the coasts of Africa, India and Indonesia. Since the islands were unknown, the nuts were thought to have grown under the sea.
