Thimpu is the capital city of Bhutan and the only capital in the world to be completely without traffic lights. Instead, traffic police stand in the middle of junctions, in full uniform complete with spotless white gloves and gleaming helmets, controlling the trickle of traffic. At an elevation of 2320m, Thimpus’ air is thin and it is not uncommon for visitors to be short of breath or have difficulty sleeping on arrival. There is an abundance of things to do in and around the city from walking along the river, visiting the weekend market, the ‘Painting School’, National Textile Museum or chancing upon an archery match at the national stadium which was built on the site of the battle for political supremacy in 1885.
