Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

One of the World’s oldest feats of engineering is the narrow gauge railway that runs from New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, to Darjeeling, rising from an altitude of 400ft to a staggering 7407ft in little over 51 miles, giving it one of the steepest gradients of any railway, anywhere.

The carriages are simple and, due to their miniature nature, were referred to by the Earl of Ronaldshay as the ‘Toy’ train in the early 1920’s. The journey has changed little through the ages and is still one of the most breathtakingly beautiful parts of the world with a panoramic view of Mt Kanchenchunga the reward from the top of the Ghum pass.

Although the entire journey does take a long time, you can choose where to get on and off so doing a portion of it is a good option.
