Amritsar

Amritsar, now the capital of Punjab and the most important pilgrimage site for the Sikhs, has had a tumultuous history since it was founded over four centuries ago. Nowadays though, a visit to Amritsar’s two renowned places – the Golden Temple and Jallianwallah Bagh – is a sombre and moving experience. For something more surreal and light-hearted however, head out to the border post at Wagah where Indian and Pakistani soldiers try and out do each other with absurd changing-of-the-guard displays. Another highlight of a visit to Amritsar is the opportunity to sample authentic Punjabi cuisine in authentic Punjabi dhabbas.
